Opera Alive
The Yorkshire Opera Workshop is pleased to present two one act operas in English.
The Yorkshire Opera Workshop is pleased to present their 2013 show, Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell (1688), and the comic Mushroom Pizza by Seymour Barab (1988). These two one act operas will be presented as single show four evenings next week at the Saltburn Arts Centre in Saltburn-by-the-Sea.
Dido and Aeneas was a masterpiece of its time, and is known today as the ‘first proper English opera’. Mushroom Pizza, on the other hand, is a comic parody of Italian opera that even those unfamiliar with opera can enjoy to the fullest. Both shows are fully staged, accompanied by piano, and enthusiastically performed by the young, budding opera stars of the Yorkshire Opera Workshop.
The workshop was founded this year by Nina Scott-Stoddart and her husband, David Mosey. For the past nine years, Ms Scott-Stoddart has run an opera workshop in Halifax, Canada. Last year, when visiting David’s family in Saltbun, Scott-Stoddart decided to found a Yorkshire workshop too. The workshop allows her to share the joys of rural Yorkshire with young Canadian singers as well as giving something to the local community on an annual basis.
Director Scott-Stoddart says, “It is such a joy to be here in Yorkshire – Saltburn has been superbly welcoming, and our singers are not only learning a lot about music, but are getting the chance to integrate with Saltburn’s community. We are already looking forward to returning next year.”
There will be four performances at the Saltburn Arts Centre, Station Street, Saltburn-by-the-Sea. Tickets are £6/£5, and can be purchased online at http://saltburnarts.co.uk or at the door.
